Welcome to Cost Effective Maintenance

Established in 1984, Cost Effective Maintenance (CEM) provides low cost methods to correct engine problems such as oil consumption, power loss, hard starting, smoke, poor fuel consumption, blow by and chronic overheating.

Founder, Brid Walker has worked extensively in the mining industry to achieve fuel efficiency benefits in large open cut mining and diesel power generation equipment. He has acted as a consultant to the large Porgera gold mine, in the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea, where because of the high altitude, diesel smoke emissions were the worst he'd seen. His recommendations resulted in dramatic reductions. With another, a large Australian bauxite mine, Walker guided them to better engine life, by focusing on changes that reduced diesel smoke particulates.

Well loved and respected bush mechanic, “Roothy”, who writes for 4WDAction, Caravan and Motorhome, and Live to Ride, had this to say about AW10 Antiwear: “This stuff is the greatest. It has to be the slipperiest thing this side of a banana peel on a boat ramp. Bugger me! Old Milo (Landcruiser Troopcarrier) is shifting gears a lot sweeter since that injection of AW 10. I felt the slicker change almost immediately. But the ultimate test was chucking a cap full in the two-stroke fuel in Mungo's ancient 25HP Mercury outboard. The bloody thing ran smoother and rattled less almost straight away.”

Rebuild avoided on Toyota Landcruiser 70 Series V8 Diesel. Working on the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade, this Toyota was badly carboned up due to Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve problems. It had been banned from the job site due to excessive smoke, and it was to be rebuilt. Owned and operated by one of Australia’s largest construction companies, their lead mechanic used Flushing Oil Concentrate, Cleanpower & FTC Decarbonizer, followed by a one hour driving off site. The result? The smoke disappeared! It saved them a rebuild cost and the significant downtime a rebuild would cause. All products are now used on that job site.

Experienced mechanic, Glenn Laws of Mobile Fleet Services had a customer with two 7L Volvo marine diesels that were so carboned up from doing short runs, that you couldn’t see the boat for smoke! Over the years, Glenn had tried plenty of additives to solve such problems, but none had worked for him. So he was pretty sceptical, but prepared to give CEM’s FTC Decarbonizer a go anyway. He charged the fuel tank with FTC, and ran each diesel at full power for a hour. The boat came back very clean...in fact there was no visible smoke at all!

Now this boat happens to be very well known in the area, and within 45 minutes, Glenn had no less than 12 phone calls to ask what he had done to fix it. That night at the Yacht Club, the owner was so over the moon and amazed, that she bowed down to Glenn, as if he were emperor!

Mechanic Michael Corbin, of 4M Maintenance Systems reported that at 300,000kms, his HiAce engine lost “approximately 50% of its power, started smoking badly, used oil, was missing on one cylinder and pinging.” The cause was discovered to be a collapsed exhaust pipe flexible link, which had caused gross carboning up internally. 

By all indications it would need rebuilding. But as a last resort, Michael tried FTC Decarbonizer in the fuel, and with just 1 weeks running, the engine was operating perfectly again…full power, no pinging, missing, smoke or oil burning! Michael always used a fuel additive, but this was not able to remove the built up carbon. Only FTC Decarbonizer was able to provide the solution, and as a mechanic, Michael is both amazed and delighted!

Sludge and carbon are big engine killers!

The engines below were all rebuilt at about half the expected life. But, that's probably a good thing...because they were all heading for a catastrophic, and much more expensive failure, if they kept running!

That carbon poses a high chance of grabbing a piston!  Extreme carbon build up on exhaust valves. Engine failure coming up... ...guaranteed!
